Audrey Hepburn and Pippin at the supermarket photographed by Bob Willoughby, 1958
When she was making Green Mansions, Audrey was told by the animal trainers that it wasn’t enough for Pippin to get familiar with her on the set - she actually had to take the deer home with her. Remembers Willoughby “When I visited Audrey, she had already had the deer for several weeks, and it had become a part of the family. Well, almost. Famous, who was normally the center of Audrey’s affection, was now jealous of all the attention the new kid was getting. It was like the first child being pushed off center stage when a new baby arrives. Audrey took Ip shopping in Bervely Hills, and what a sensation she created. Bervely Hills habitués are fairly blasé about what they see, but Audrey being followed around town by this lovely creature stopped everyone in their tracks. What interested me at the time was that though everyone at Gelson’s supermarket was interested, not one person crowded in and tried to pet the deer or ask Audrey about it. I can’t explain why that was. It was truly amazing to see Audrey with that fawn.”
